Climate change is a harbinger of great concern and danger for the world. A single tree can absorb up to 48 Pounds of Carbon dioxide in one year. Losing a forest, on the other hand, adds more Carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and causes climate change. What happens when a forest is cut down? The first thing to happen is the oxygen in the air near the ground becomes depleted. Trees absorb CO2 (Carbon dioxide) and give oxygen through their leaves during photosynthesis. Large or small, trees absorb heat from the sun and release it back into the atmosphere like a small, green air conditioner.
A new report released by World Resources Institute (WRI) and Forest Climate Solutions (FCS) says that if we plant trees now, by 2050, we can be the solution to climate change. The report also mentions that planting trees is better than cutting down trees for cars. It could absorb one-quarter of the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels if 20% of the world’s barren lands are covered with trees.
Climate change is real, everyone knows it, but we don’t all agree on the best way to combat it. On the other hand, Pakistan is taking it a step further, and after accepting the term ‘climate change as a reality, it’s now introduced a project to deal with it and is inviting the world to help itself.
Billion Tree Project by Pakistan for Climate Change
“Billion Tree Tsunami” is an ambitious project aiming to plant one billion trees across the country. Considering how deforestation has become a significant issue in Pakistan. This initiative from the government would be a monumental step to take toward fighting climate change.
The government has planned to plant trees in places that are prone to floods, sandstorms, and other ecological threats. The project will also generate employment opportunities and should involve the local community in tree plantations.
A unique project of planting a billion trees in Pakistan is underway in all parts of the country. Established in 2008, Pakistan’s Billion Tree Tsunami is a project of the Citizens’ Alliance for Greening Pakistan (CAGP). Pakistan’s largest collaborative civil society initiative aims to improve local livelihoods and promote adaptation to climate change through reforestation.
Billion Tree Tsunami has achieved considerable success, with more than 50 million trees planted on private lands and public spaces. It provides opportunities for farmers, communities, and organizations in forest areas and all across Pakistan. Billion Tree Tsunami has planted new trees all along the Indus River basin and on the slopes of the Himalayas to the foothills.
Plantation to Save the Environment
Pakistan Environmental Forum (PEN) organized a plantation campaign with The Rescue 1122. The campaign was to raise awareness among the masses about the adverse impact of Climate Change on their lives by educating and motivating them to plant trees to save the environment.
PEN planted more than 150 saplings of different varieties on the campuses of the University of Agriculture.
The participants, who included Rescue 1122 officials and renowned social activists, planted thousands of saplings alongside the PEN members. They also raised slogans against deforestation and appealed masses to play their part in saving our environment and coming up with a solution to overcome the challenges of climate change.
Organizing the plantation drive was to create awareness among the masses against deforestation. They should take up tree plantations individually and collectively. The event concluded. The Rescue 1122 members pledge to plant more trees in the future.
