In the 1960s, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) created the Super Pumper. Following a series of devastating fires in New York City, which highlighted the need for a more powerful firefighting vehicle.
It was first put into action in 1972 during a fire at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. This newly designed fire truck was able to deliver over 8,000 gallons of water per minute. Since then, the Super Pumper has been used in numerous other firefighting operations in New York City, including the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
