Climate Change- Myth or Reality

Introduction

There is an evident effect of climate change on the global environment or climate. The ongoing environmental disasters in the world in the form of heavy urban floods and heat waves are the reflection of this ongoing severe change. The change caused by humans is not stoppable now but its rate of deterioration can be reduced to save this globe. The recent Conference of Parties started from November 6th ā€“ 18th (COP27) brought together all different countries from around the world to commit and implement existing goals by considering compensation for the affected as well. However, a few climate scientists have argued having a voice in opposition to the fact that warming is in response to human activities. As a result, people have been receiving conflicting messages and views about the level of uncertainty on various elements of the global warming debate.

Here we are summarizing the facts, indicators, and perceptions to clarify the misconceptions that erupted in the public related to global warming. The identified few myths will be cleared after a detailed understanding.

Facts in support of Reality

These observations are based on global climate change and are not dependent on the local model of climate.

  • The most abundant Greenhouse GasĀ  (GHG) on this planet is water vapor which remains in almost constant concentration in the atmosphere.
  • The atmospheric concentration of other GHG – Carbon Dioxide, is increasing day by day. The primary cause of this increase is the burning of fossil fuels and large-scale deforestation.
  • The atmospheric concentration of methane Gas which is also a GHG is increasing because of emissions from wetlands, animal residue, rice paddies, etc.
  • The GHGs made the Globe liveable as these are the main cause to maintain the earth’s temperature. In the absence of GHGs, life is impossible on Earth.
  • The lifetime of Carbon Dioxide is about 150 years.
  • The decrease in Ozone concentration in the Stratosphere caused a reduction of temperature in that region due to the ozone depletion hole. That is now refilled or healed.
  • Over the past 100 years, the Earthā€™s surface has warmed by about 0.5oC (+/- 0.2oC).

Why global warming is a reality?

The temperature of the stratosphere will continue to cool at this rate with the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide. Resultantly, water vapor concentration will increase by about 6% for every 1oC of warming. As we have already discussed- water vapors are the abundant GHG on this planet. The predicted doubling concentration of carbon dioxide will play lead to a warming of 1.5 to 4.5 degrees Celcius. The precipitation level will be increased by 2 (+/-0.5)% per 1oC of warming- Climate change.

Concluding

As the debate on climate change intensifies, it will be necessary to continue to clarify the level of uncertainty of the various scientific issues so that the economic, political, social, and ethical alternatives can be evaluated in the most rational manner. So, Climate change is no longer a myth in the current world.
